New larger oil on panel painting ‘Illuminated Wood’ 140 x 80cm - many layers and glazes to build up contrast and drama.

I think the painting is finished although I have returned to this one a few times to tweak. It definitely needs a frame, and something a bit more substantial than just a tray frame.

New long landscape ‘Above the Gorge’ measures about 80cm framed.

I have some large long landscape panels primed up,
so these smaller works are vital for exploring proportions and how to convey multiple viewpoints on one flat surface.

I'm also striving to make the surface more interesting
with different translucencies and brush marks, retaining initial strokes and not losing them all under layers of paint.

New long landscape ‘Views from the edge of the wood’, measures about 80cm framed.

I do like to garden in the dark on mild evenings, with a lantern highlighting structure and pathways. This piece is partly imagined, partly my own garden reimagined in scale, with its tangle of trees and narrow pathways.

Over the next few days I’ll share pieces that sold at #aafbattersea before finding their way onto instagram, starting with….

Midnight in the Wood, 122 x 100cm (oil on wood panel) which emerged from a little oil on paper following one of my local wood walks to survey Tawny Owls, and the rediscovery of a tatty mud stained sketch made in a gallery in Haarlem 25 years ago. (The gallery wasn’t muddy, but somewhere in its lost years was definitely squelchy!)

Painting is always a pleasure but there was something extra special about the late night creation of this piece with its open textures and luminosity.
